| Unfinished History of eastern Utah`s forgotten railroad Located in eastern Utah`s scenic San Rafael Desert lies many miles of an unfinished railroad grade. During the year of 1881 the Denver and Rio Grande railroad decided to build a route between price, Utah and green river through the San Rafael desert starting at dead horse crossing near Wellington, Utah passing through Cleveland, Utah, towards buckhorn reservoir then divided at Hadden Flats. The southern branch would have headed to Salina Canyon. The eastern branch which has been graded into the town of Green River Utah. But after realizing that an error in the calculation of the an elevation was found to be much steeper than originally thought all efforts to complete the line was halted after spending a total of $217,470. Today much of the grade can be explored much where you will see shelters, culverts, camp sites and places where they have left there names. Maps and many books are available. |
